This session explores what socialism is and isn’t by examining how it has been defined historically and how it is understood today. Using data, analysis, and interactive student activities, participants will investigate socialist ideas and their real-world application over time, including a comparative look at policies in Poland, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, and Singapore. In addition, the session situates socialism in contrast to market-based systems by examining how market economies evolve over time to address key challenges such as inequality, externalities, and the need for regulation. Participants will explore how governments and institutions within market economies respond to these issues through policies like taxation, social safety nets, environmental regulation, and consumer protections.
